Web Resources

The links below will take you to websites that list ALL AGEP programs nationally, by region and institution, with contacts for each program.

The Web links below were compiled for a presentation on "Transitioning to the Professoriate" Laurie Churchill and Christine Marlow in May 2003. The links are divided into the following categories:

  • Meta-Web sites for Transitioning to the Professoriate: These meta-Web sites contain an incredible amount of information including tips, questions and answers, guides, job searches, and links to other resources. Issues such as interviewing for postdocs and faculty positions and negotiating contracts are covered in articles found on these sites. Click on the title to visit the Web site.
    • Chronicle of Higher Education
Articles on all aspects of higher education; database of academic jobs (faculty and administrative) at community colleges, 4-year and research institutions, updated daily and searchable by discipline, state; faculty salary database; Career Talk includes Q and A on various aspects of the academic job search, finishing the dissertation, landing a first job, negotiating a contract, writing a statement of teaching philosophy; links to other resources include: job listings by discipline; other job databases; sites of interest to recent Ph.D. and postdocs. Much of this site is free; daily new stories and some other functions are by subscription.
      Science/Next Wave
This is the online version of Science Magazine and is specifically intended as a career development resource for scientists. Some portions of the site are free and others are by subscription. The prices are quite reasonable: $20 per year for non-AAAS members and complimentary if you join AAAS ($70/year for students and $95/year for postdocs). The free items are as follows: 1) Career Development Center has items of interest to postdocs and junior faculty (e.g., articles on grant-writing, teaching, academic career advice, Science Magazine) along with links to the Postdoc Network, and GrantsNet.
      Re-envisioning the PhD
A cutting-edge site on doctoral education including: Current News in Doctoral Education (with articles on employment, job searches, interviewing, studies and statistics and promising practices in graduate education); PhD Resources (with information on obtaining a Ph.D., employment, and PhD Vignettes). A very rich site and it's free!
      Minority Scientists Network
The Network will focus on encouraging under-represented minorities to remain in the sciences, either as scientists, medical doctors, or physician-scientists. The online community will feature role model essays offering personal testimonials and career advice, profiles of effective mentors, live chats, a listserv to match students with faculty looking for interns and a database of funding opportunities.

  • Faculty Positions: links to searchable databases for faculty jobs.
    • JobsNet: is the best spot to link to the jobs listings in Science Magazine, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Earthworks, Neuroscience Newsletter, the University Job Bank, and more.
FacultyfortheFuture.org: Searchable database of academic career, graduate and undergraduate research opportunities. You can post your resume on this site. Maintained by the College of Engineering at Pennsylvania State University.
Job Search at Science/Next Wave: Search by discipline, keyword, region, or type of organization.
      Postdoc Positions

  • Postdocs: links to resources to make the most of your postdoctoral experience.
    • Postdoc Network: Found on the Science/Next Wave Web site. This has lots of good articles on cutting edge issues and links to postdoc resources.
The Chronicle has numerous articles on all aspects of the postdoc experience. Use the free search engine to search for articles. One of the articles includes a listing of Web resources.
How to choose a postdoc. See this article from the American Psychological Association on finding the right fit and what to look for in a research-oriented postdoctoral position.

  • Teaching Matters: tips, techniques, workshops devoted to teaching improvement. Teaching is one of the primary activities of the university. More and more, the importance of good teaching is being recognized and rewarded.
  • Grantsmanship: searchable databases, guidebooks, applications, and funding opportunities. Writing grant proposals for funding is another primary activity performed by university faculty. We have gathered some resources that we believe will be beneficial to you as you write.
    • National Science Foundation Grants and Awards: An overview and a listing of new funding opportunities. These are listed in two locations: NSF Guide to Programs and Program Announcements and Information. Also look at the Grant Proposal Guide; this is an excellent resource that can help in developing proposals for other funding agencies.
National Institutes of Heath (NIH) Grants and Funding: A central site for information about NIH grant and fellowship programs, applying for a grant or fellowship, policy changes, administrative responsibilities of awardees, peer review policies and procedures, and the numbers and characteristics of awards made by the NIH. Managed by the Office of Extramural Research (OER).
CRISP: A searchable database of NIH-funded research. An excellent resource for developing grant proposals
National Center for Environmental Research: An excellent resource for environmental research opportunities at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
COS Grants: Access to this database searches the Community of Science's federally funded grant programs and research opportunities.
NASA Research Opportunities: NASA funding opportunities including a guidebook for proposal writers.

  • Balancing Work, Family, and Community: questions and answers, tips, etc. about juggling all of these activities.  The demands placed upon graduate students, postdocs, and new faculty members can seem overwhelming. Here are some resources with advice about how to balance these demands.

COWPRA: Consortium of Western and Puerto Rico AGEPs The consortium brings together the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate in Arizona, California, Colorado, Puerto Rico, Texas, and New Mexico, all of which are funded by the National Science Foundation and provide programs intended to increase the number of minority Ph.D.s in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and pursue careers as university professors. Visit the COWPRA Web site for events, opportunities, and programs at COWPRA universities.
